Since its launch in 2020, BIO Integration has provided an interdisciplinary forum at the interface of biology, medicine, engineering, and technology. The journal was founded to address the growing need for scientific platforms that unite diverse disciplines to overcome complex biomedical challenges, and accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into biomedical and clinical benefits.
In recent years, the biomedical landscape has continued to evolve rapidly. Advances across biomaterials, nanomedicine, regenerative medicine, biomedical imaging, artificial intelligence, systems-level biology, data-driven biomedical science, and precision medicine have reinforced the importance of integrated approaches to biomedical research and healthcare innovation. Impactful research increasingly lies not within individual disciplines but in the convergence of technological innovation, biological understanding, and biomedical application.
In parallel, BIO Integration has gained valuable experience through its published work and ongoing engagement with authors, reviewers, and the wider scientific community. In response, the editorial board has refined the journal’s Aims and Scope to more clearly define its scientific focus and to better guide prospective contributors.
Importantly, this refinement does not represent a change in the journal’s fundamental mission. Instead, it strengthens and clarifies the journal’s longstanding commitment to translational biomedicine enabled by integrated biomedical technologies and systems-level approaches. The revised scope emphasizes research that combines four key elements: technological innovation, mechanistic insight, biomedical application, and translational potential. Together, these pillars define the type of work that BIO Integration seeks to publish: research that not only advances knowledge but also demonstrates meaningful pathways toward biomedical or clinical impact.
More broadly, translational biomedical research is increasingly recognized as a bidirectional process rather than a linear progression from laboratory discovery to clinical practice. Clinical challenges frequently inspire new scientific questions, while discoveries from basic and applied research inform the development of innovative diagnostics, therapeutics, and biomedical technologies. BIO Integration therefore embraces a “bench-to-bedside-and-back” perspective, encouraging studies that connect fundamental mechanisms, technological innovation, biomedical application, and real-world evidence in a continuous cycle of biomedical discovery, validation, and improvement.
The updated Aims and Scope further reflect several areas that have become prominent within the journal’s established scope. These include biomaterials and nanomedicine, biomedical imaging and intelligent health technologies, regenerative medicine and rehabilitation engineering, and omics-driven systems medicine. Although not exhaustive, these domains reflect the journal’s focus on integrative and translational research spanning molecular and cellular mechanisms, biomedical technologies, disease models, and translational applications.
In addition, the revised scope provides clearer guidance on research that generally falls outside the journal’s remit. Although BIO Integration remains committed to multidisciplinary research, all submissions must demonstrate clear biomedical relevance and translational value. Manuscripts that are primarily descriptive, lack clear translational relevance, or do not demonstrate a meaningful connection between scientific innovation and biomedical application are unlikely to be considered. Similarly, purely technical developments without clear biomedical relevance or translational potential may be beyond the journal’s scope.
The defining characteristic of BIO Integration is the integration of technological innovation, biological understanding, biomedical and clinical needs, and translational implementation. The journal particularly welcomes studies that bridge traditionally separate disciplines and demonstrate how interdisciplinary approaches can accelerate the development of solutions to major biomedical and healthcare challenges. Beyond reporting scientific advances, BIO Integration seeks research that establishes meaningful connections among discovery, validation, and real-world biomedical impact.
The editorial board believes that this refinement will strengthen the journal’s identity, increase coherence across published work, and enhance its value to authors, reviewers, and readers alike. By clearly defining its expectations while maintaining a focus on integrated approaches to biomedical innovation and translation, BIO Integration aims to support the dissemination of high-quality research that bridges disciplinary boundaries, while addressing important unmet needs in medicine and healthcare.
We remain grateful to our authors, reviewers, readers, and editorial board members for their continued support. As the journal enters its next phase of development, we look forward to advancing interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerating the translation of scientific discovery into improved patient outcomes.
The revised Aims and Scope will take effect on July 1, 2026. This update represents a clarification and strengthening of the journal’s established focus rather than a change in the journal’s disciplinary identity.
